it had been a moon since spruceblaze's passing. in all honesty, newtbriar hadn't really known what to do with themself after that. they weren't even entirely sure what he really was to them. they'd been mates, sure, but they didn't really know how to begin to describe their feelings toward him, in all honesty. regardless, he was gone now, and though newtbriar grieved for the loss of her mate-- best friend?-- she knew she had to push onward. after all, with duskstride still by their side, they knew they'd be alright. however, they'd been feeling rather... ill, as of late, and they couldn't quite place their paw on why. it started as a brief feeling of nausea, early in the morning. but after several days, a week, two weeks... it had yet to fade. they had a feeling that they knew why that could be, but they figured it'd be best to check in with lionfire regardless, to make sure.[break][break]

but if their theory was correct, then... spruceblaze's wish would be coming true. with that thought in mind, newtbriar heaves themself to their paws with a grunt and briskly made their way out of the warrior's den. it was still fairly early; the clearing was quiet. but the clan would be waking soon. with a dismissive flick of their ear, newtbriar made their way to lionfire's den, their pace slowing ever so slightly in reluctance. they weren't sure whether to be frightened or excited. "lionfire?" the tortoiseshell warrior meowed, poking their head in the medicine den. "do you have a moment? i haven't been feeling so well lately." their fur prickled slightly in anticipation as they stepped inside, pausing as their eyes adjusted to the darkness of the den. they knew they'd agreed to this earlier, but the thought of them actually being pregnant sent a brief thrill of anxiety through them. but surely everything would be fine... right?[break][break]

Ever since Hawkflight’s death, the medicine cat hadn’t been able to rest well. For the first time in her entire life she had the den to herself. I haven’t been feeling so well lately.”* A familiar voice called out, breaking the medicine cat from her thoughts as she sat up straight in her nest. A soft smile formed at the corner’s of her face as the familiar pelt of Newtbriar stepped into her den.[break][break] The ginger cat rose to her paws and padded up to greet the tortoiseshell. No signs of the sadness that had kept the medicine cat up all night existed as Lionfire wore a mask around her clanmates well. Perhaps, it was a skill she had acquired after years of having to live a lie around them. newtbriar was relieved to spot the familiar ginger pelt of lionfire, right where they expected to see her. "what brings you to me, today?" her purr of greeting helped ease some of the tortoiseshell's nerves. ”i can cure almost any illness, or injury. shadowclan was lucky to have two medicine cats for as long as we did, i was able to learn so much from hawkflight.” newtbriar nodded with a small smile, though the mention of lionfire's former mentor brought on a brief wave of sadness. just as quickly, however, they shook it off. "i'm counting on that." they mewed with a small chuckle. "it's just, well, i've been getting random bouts of nausea every morning for... a couple of weeks now. i thought it might pass soon enough, but it's been rather persistent, and it's becoming enough of a distraction that i figured i should come to you for a check up." they paused a moment, scratching at the side of their head sheepishly. "i can't tell if i'm actually sick, or if there might be another cause for it."[break][break]

"i figured, well, if anyone could figure it out, it would be you." they added as they turned to face the medicine cat again, an uneasy smile on their maw. they'd be lying if they said they weren't nervous, though. they hoped it wasn't obvious, trying their hardest to keep their fur from prickling. more than ever, they wished duskstride had been by their side... but of course, she had her own duties to attend to. newtbriar let out a slow exhale and slowly sat down, their tail landing on the ground with a soft thump. "even if i'm just overreacting or something, that'll be a relief. can't be too cautious, though, i suppose."
