The cold air captured Lionfire’s breath as she trekked through the outskirts of ShadowClan’s territory. Her golden eyes scanned the ground that donned a thin layer of frost, looking for any herbs that were still salvageable to add to her stores before leaf-bare hit.[break][break] Her mind, however, was clouded and her entire body felt like it was operating in autopilot. Even after three moons the grief had not left her or subsided. In was in times like these that she preferred to be alone, where she could focus on a mindless task and process her losses without keeping up a façade. [break][break] For many seasons, her and Hawkflight had been ShadowClan’s medicine cats. Now, she was filled with uncertainty as leaf-bare approached. This would be the first time in ages that ShadowClan would face the harsh season with a single medicine cat in their ranks. It was undoubtedly a disadvantage.[break][break] Her heart mourned for the tom in a pain that was indescribable. She had deeply despised him and his presence for being a rogue-born cat, only to end up falling in love with him. Now, it had felt like it was only just a dream, with the only reminders of it being real in the physical forms of their two daughters.[break][break] Their two, precious, perfect daughters. Even if she could only love them from a distance, it would suffice. They would never know her identity as their mother – but as long as they were alive and healthy, it was all Lionfire cared about. [break][break] A streak of black fur caught the medicine cat’s attention, immediately breaking her from her thoughts and taking her back to the present. The medicine cat’s fur bristled, only for it to lie flat again moments later as she recognized the other cat as none other than Beetleberry; WindClan’s newest medicine cat.[break][break] ”Oh, um, hello there, Beetleberry. You spooked me.” She mewed, trying her hardest to come off as pleasant. After seasons of her and Hawkflight turning their backs toward StarClan, it felt nothing short of awkward reconnecting with the other medicine cats after his death. Everything had changed so quickly; Crowsight’s sudden dip in health and all that remained unsaid in their training together. StarClan had not exactly left him with confidence either, as the former medicine cat’s sad eyes met him in his dreams, finally knowing the truth about Coalpaw’s death. The black medicine cat had to say, it was the first time he’d felt even a slight bit of regret for the decision to prompt her death along. Yet, it was by no means due to the act, or the final result. Only in the way that it had upset his former mentor as they stood there. Then again, he supposed that was why he’d been given his suffix. To ensure he didn’t forget the decision he had made. He supposed it had served its purpose. Every time someone called him by his new name the thought was there. It was what had lead him to step out into the territory on his first solo herb hunt since the death, in an attempt to refocus on learning all he could, and finding the truth to controlling death. The further he walked, the more he focused on the task. With his nose to the ground and green eyes focused, he scanned the grass for any signs of remaining sprouts. He hadn’t processed how far he had gone until the scent of the thunderpath stung at his nose, and a voice called out to him. ”Oh, um, hello there, Beetleberry. You spooked me.” News really had travelled fast. The black tom lifted his head, ears flicking back briefly before he focused on Lionfire’s form; a surprisingly unfamiliar one of all the medicine cats but a welcome one nonetheless. “Good morning, Lionfire!” The tom chirped, and offered a small smile. ”Out gathering herbs, too, I take it?” He bobbed his head, glancing back into the territory. “Trying, anyway. The frost seems to have affected anything that’s still blooming on the moors…” he trailed off. Not that he exactly knew what was still worthwhile after the frost. That had been a lesson Crowsight had been saving for the first one to occur – an opportunity missed. “Does frost kill things completely? I saw the leaves were all wrinkled, but… can they still be used? Crowsight never said…” he trailed off, dipping his head slightly. He wanted to learn; he wasn’t done learning, but it still felt strange to ask another cat that wasn’t his mentor. Especially one he knew so little about like Lionfire. Curiosity burned behind his gaze at the thought and he stored the bubbling question away. Medicine came first; it always would. Crowsight never said…”* Beetleberry trailed off, and dipped his head mournfully.[break][break] It immediately elicited a wave of sympathy and empathy for the tom. She, too, was going through much of the same emotions. The only difference between them was Lionfire had gotten many more moons of training, and Hawkflight was much more than just a mentor to her. The medicine cat’s pelt pricked with unease at the thought of anyone figuring that out. A part of her wondered if anyone in ShadowClan had started to realize how Tigerlily looked remarkably like him.[break][break] The medicine cat shook her head at the thought before making eye contact with Beetleberry again. ”I’m sorry Beetleberry, you have my condolences for your loss. I’m still struggling to process Hawkflight’s death, but I cannot imagine what you’re going through.” She purred gently, as her expression softened from it’s initial guarded look that she had worn around the other medicine cats since returning to the half-moon meetings.[break][break] ”If you have any questions at all, don’t be afraid to bring them up to me. I’ve done this for moons and I would be happy to help.” She meowed, hoping to sound genuine, and not a formality. Medicine was an art she took seriously, and every clan deserved a knowledgeable medicine cat. ”You’ll still be able to use the herbs if they’re not in too bad of a condition. Try to pull off anything that’s completely dead from the leaf. The herbs won’t be as potent, but it’ll make due in a time like leaf-bare. “[break][break] Memories of a leaf-bare where ShadowClan got hit with an illness that wiped out half the clan came flooding to her mind.
